Recommendations
The items on this list are personally recommended items or services that I have purchased or used. There are also substitute items that function similarly to items I have purchased (for example, different bay NAS devices). I will never recommend something I haven’t used! Network Attached Storage (NAS) Devices
I have created a dedicated post on Synology NAS devices and you can check that our here!
NAS Hard Drives
I have created a dedicated post on NAS Hard Drives that you can check out here! If you’d prefer shucking a drive to save a little money, you can continue to read below.
If you’re looking to backup a NAS to an external hard drive, Western Digital Elements external hard drives are off-label NAS hard drives. You can even find ways to “shuck” them online.
Please keep in mind that if you do “shuck” the drive, the warranty will be voided if you attempt to send back the failing, bare drive. Always keep the external enclosure and put the drive back in before sending for warranty purposes. Removing the drive from the enclosure and then adding it back before sending for warranty will not void your warranty.
A helpful viewer of the blog pointed out that if you do “shuck” the drive and use it in a redundant array, you will need to enable TLER on the drive. I have not done this myself, but I found a post on reddit that can help enable TLER on a Synology NAS.

Friends of WunderTech
Creating a channel on YouTube or a blog is incredibly difficult these days. Hundreds of hours have been put into WunderTech and the same is true for most other content creators. This section will be dedicated to people who have helped grow WunderTech into what it is today.
Tech Me Out is a YouTube channel focusing on technology reviews, unboxings, tutorials and more. I highly suggest that you check out their channel and subscribe!
Black Void is a Synology Media Partner and a consulting firm that creates great content on everything Synology. Check them out!
SynoForum is the unofficial Synology forum for all NAS owners! If you have a question or just want to see what’s going on in the Synology world, this is the place to go!
Battery Backup Devices (UPS)
A UPS is an uninterruptible power supply that provides emergency power (in the form of a battery) if you lose power. It also acts as a surge protector and stabilizes voltage. It is highly suggested that you purchase and connect a UPS device to your NAS device.
The items below have a USB cable that will allow your NAS (or PC) to monitor the UPS to properly shut itself down in the event of a power failure. Never worry about your NAS again!
- APC 1500VA UPS: 10 power outlets.
- APC 600VA UPS: 7 power outlets.
- APC 425VA UPS: 6 power outlets.
Raspberry Pi
There’s not much you can’t do with a Raspberry Pi at this point. One of the most versatile devices you can buy!
