If you’ve been waiting for Synology to release a new device, we might not be that far from seeing it. User ministry on the r/synology subreddit found an image on Synology’s website with what appears to be a new entry to the lineup – the Synology DS1825+. It doesn’t have any details, but it does appear as if it’s coming…we just don’t know when.

The Synology DS1821+ was announced in December of 2020, so we’re long overdue for a new device with prior refreshes being 2-3 years apart. The biggest question is…what will be changed on the Synology DS1825+? Well, that’s where things get tougher, but we’ll try and look at what it might look like below.

When it is released, we’ll have all the official specs on our best Synology NAS models article!

Projected Synology DS1825+ Specs

Let me start this off by saying that no one other than Synology themselves actually know what’s in the DS1825+ and anything mentioned by just about anyone is pure speculation. With that said, I’m going to do my best to throw my hat in the ring and project what I think it might have based on Synology’s prior direction in terms of upgrades.

First, the Synology DS1821+…it comes with an AMD Ryzen V1500B processor, 4GB of ECC RAM, 2 NVMe drive slots, four 1GbE network ports, and 1 x Gen3 x8 PCIe slot (x4 link). There are other features of the device, but these are what I consider to be the most important aspects of the device. It’s a solid device, but as time has gone on, it’s started to show its age and a refresh is needed.

Now for the projected Synology DS1825+ specs…which again, are pure speculation. I suspect that we’ll be seeing more of the same in terms of just about everything. In fact, I think it will look the same as the 1821+ above looks.

However, I think we’ll see a slight increase in CPU processing. My wild prediction which is almost certainly wrong is that we’ll see a Ryzen R2314. I have three main reasons for this guess:

  • It’s an upgrade over the V1500B while not impacting the superior processor in the 1823xs+ or pushing people away from it.
  • It supports Ryzen Embedded Graphics, so technically, some form of hardware transcoding would be supported…assuming the applications support the iGPU. It’ll still support ECC memory as well.

  • I suspect there will be some sort of upgrade over the current generation, and in terms of performance, this is the sweet spot where it’s better than the last generation without being too good and pushing people away from the 1823xs+.

The embedded graphics would make a lot of people happy, but again, wouldn’t be what people who are used to Intel’s QuickSync are used to…mainly because the support at this point just doesn’t appear to be there, but this could push it over the edge.

For everything else, I think we will basically see a clone of what it currently has:

  • 4GB of ECC RAM (max 32GB)
  • 2 NVMe M.2 Drive Slots
  • 4 RJ-45 1GbE LAN Ports
  • 1 x Gen3 x8 PCIe Slot (x4 Link)

Which sadly…means no 2.5GbE networking and an add-on card for 10GbE still. Similar to most Synology upgrades, I think we’re looking at an extremely minimal upgrade, but Synology still has the benefit of bundling these devices with Synology DSM which is so far ahead of the competition that…it just makes sense that they can provide another incremental upgrade that people will still buy.

The good or bad part about this is that when it’s officially released, we’re most likely looking at the eventual DS1625+/1626+ depending on when it’s released. The DS1618+/DS1819+ shared the same processor and the DS1621+/DS1821+ do too, so it just makes sense that we’re looking at the eventual 6-bay specs as well.

I have a few other…guesses we’ll say…for what eventual Synology models could look like in the video below, with the understanding that everything is pure speculation.

When Will the Synology DS1825+ be Released?

This is harder to answer, but we may be very close to an announcement. Synology has made announcements in the June/July timeframe in the past, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we’ll have a new device announcement in the next few weeks.

Once it’s announced, you can expect a few weeks at a minimum before you can purchase it in stores, however, the leaked screenshot above is a great indication that we’ll at least see it by the end of the year.

Here are my thoughts on this…

The chances are high that I’m simply wrong about all of these DS1825+ projections. My buddy Robbie over at NASCompares thinks that we might actually see the SAME processor as the current lineup has (V1500B).

That would be devastating to me as a Synology fan and someone who will potentially upgrade to this device. My HOPE is that they won’t do that since the device was released almost 4 years ago at this point, but I guess we’ll see!

Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Hopefully, more information will be coming soon!
